Pendragon Forms FAQ

I have an existing Microsoft Access database. Can I synchronize it with my handheld using Pendragon Forms?

You can synchronize individual tables in Microsoft Access to forms on your handheld.  Pendragon Forms has an Import feature that will build a Pendragon Form from your table design.  Then you can use the Field Mapping Tool to map your Pendragon Form to your existing Access table.  After mapping, Pendragon Forms will synchronize directly with your existing database.

If your database is relational (i.e., your database has several related tables), it may still be possible to synchronize your database by using subforms, but this requires more advanced knowledge of Pendragon Forms and Microsoft Access.  In essence, you can connect each table to a separate form, and use lookups and subforms to achieve a framework for data entry and retrieval.

Is Pendragon Forms a relational database?

Strictly speaking, no.  However, Pendragon Forms does allow you to create forms and related subforms.  For example, you can create a list of patients, and relate it to a list of surgical procedures.  This will result in two tables on the PC that can be joined with Access queries.  You can also do lookups from one form to another.

Will Pendragon Forms work over a network?

Yes, Pendragon Forms can be synchronized over a TCP/IP network connection.  You can even synchronize over the Internet!  You can also set up Pendragon Forms over a LAN through shared file access.

Additional Network Server Licenses permit multiple simultaneous synchronizations

Can I create a shrink-wrap application with Pendragon Forms?

Yes.  The Pendragon Forms Distribution Toolbox permits royalty-free distribution of applications based on Pendragon Forms (with some restrictions).

My application works great in the single user mode; how does multi-user synchronization work?

Pendragon Forms has many options for multi-user synchronization.  If you are doing pure data collection, you simply obtain a multi-user license to cover each handheld that you are using.  For each form, the data collected on the different handhelds is placed into the same table.  Each record includes the date and time of creation and the HotSync username of the handheld device.

When Pendragon Forms is set up for a work order application, records can be created on the desktop with the username of the appropriate handheld device in the UserName column.  Incomplete work orders are automatically sent to the appropriate handheld.  After being completed on the handheld, the record is automatically removed.

If you are synchronizing bidirectionally, data can also be shared across handheld devices.  However, care must be taken when doing this.  If two users modify the same record on their handhelds, then whoever synchronizes last wins.
