Pendragon Forms Case Study

Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Scenario:

Pendragon Forms applications have replaced paper forms for snow crab survey voyages on the St. Lawrence Estuary.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Overview:

Fisheries and Oceans Canada conducts annual Snow Crab surveys along the St. Lawrence Estuary in Quebec.  During the two week voyage, surveyors measure as many as 20,000 crabs in order to determine the status of the snow crab biomass.

Before using handhelds to collect data, surveyors used paper forms, a task made difficult by windy conditions aboard the trawler.  After the survey had been completed, it would take three weeks to retype the data into a database.

Pendragon Forms Solution:

Jean-Paul Dallaire, a scientist in the Invertebrates and Experimental Biology Division, developed Pendragon Forms applications for crab data collection.  Researchers now enter location, species, sex, and measurements of each crab into a handheld form.  Branching has been built-into the form to streamline the data collection process, and the data is synchronized to a laptop several time each day.

In addition to making information available for immediate analysis, the handheld forms have improved the quality of data.  Transcription errors have been eliminated and validation parameters built-into the forms reduce errors made at the point of collection.

Benefits:

By eliminating data entry cost, this group has saved $10,000 CDN over four years.
